Summer is over, school is back, and suddenly players are juggling homework, early mornings, practices, and tournaments.
Fall club basketball is the perfect time to build the habits that will carry you into winter school ball—but only if you learn to manage everything else, too. Here are a few things to be mindful of:
Lock In at School
Treat homework like practice: eliminate distractions and get it done with purpose. Use study hall, library time, or the hours before practice to knock out assignments whenever possible.
Use Fall Ball to Build Winter Habits
Don’t just play games—develop your game. Work on your weaknesses, defense, conditioning, communication, and decision-making. The habits you build now will show up when winter tryouts arrive.
Make the Most of Your Time
The hours between school and practice matter. Keep a good snack in your bag, get some homework done, and arrive at practice fueled and ready to work instead of rushed and exhausted. Time efficiency is completely necessary for a student athlete.
Protect Your Recovery
Sleep is part of training. A tired player can’t learn, perform, or recover at their best. Make sleep, nutrition, and rest days part of your basketball routine.
Parents: Support the Transition
Fall can be just as busy for parents. Help your athlete stay organized, keep healthy snacks available, and focus conversations on effort, attitude, growth, and preparation—not just points scored. Most importantly, help them find balance. The goal isn’t to do everything perfectly. It’s to arrive at winter season healthy, confident, prepared, and ready to compete.
Lock in this fall. Build the habits now that will separate you in winter.
